8.1) expand on the existing synthetic methods (PTS-Si and PtCl4) developed to generate the o-QMs and mediate the [4+2]-cycloaddition reactions for modified 2-aryl chroman systems of medicinal interest,
8.2) apply the methods for the total synthesis of compounds containing the moieties whose preparations will be studied in 8.1,
8.3) develop a facile synthesis of benzocyclobutanes (BCBs) with different functionalizable substituents and,
8.4) study the thermal reverse [2+2]-cycloaddition reactions of BCBs (as well as other means) to ortho-quinodimethanes (o-QDMs) and their use in total synthesis of compounds with potential medicinal/agricultural interests.
