วัตถุประสงค์
:
Compile an inventory of aquatic Empididae diversity associated with calcareous spring and stream waters in Thailand.
Identify all known species and describe new species
Delimit species assemblages / communities.
Delimit how species and communities are associated geographically and with geological formations, hydrological, physicochemical and ecological conditions( e.g. tufaized / non-tufaized, rheocrene / limnocrene, pH, flow rate, conductivity, temperature, canopy cover etc.).
Identify taxa with disjunct ranges
Identify zones of point or coherent area endemism
Determine intraspecific genetic differentiation amongst populations of disjunct taxa and amongst populations of coherent endemic areas. Investigate potential correlations between genetic distance and geological / climatic / ecological history
Look for evidence of spring-head refugia (such as presence of cold-adapted Clinocerinae).
Determine if tropical tufa communities in Thailand have similar ecology to those in temperate systems? For example, do they have similar responsiveness to flow rate or canopy cover? Are potential seasonal constraints (e.g. temperature / flow variation) operating in lower reaches ameliorated at spring-heads? Are spring-heads aseasonal?
