Specific Aim: To examine the feasibility of theoretically defensible, evidence-based and fully defined therapeutic intervention (ASAP) delivered during the post-acute outpatient interval (1-3 months) in mildly to moderately impaired stroke survivors. The feasibility will be measured by the gains in the primary outcomes of paretic upper extremity function at post treatment and a persistent gain at 6 month follow up. Our next step would be to compare this ASAP to a usual care outpatient intervention. An ultimate goal is to establish a scientific-based model for physical rehabilitation of upper extremity function post-stroke that is effective in achieving patient goals.
Hypothesis 1: There will be no difference in the time score from the Wolf Motor Function Test (WMFTT), the behavioral kinematics of reach-to-grasp action, and the Stroke Impact Scale (SIS) between the two baseline evaluations.
Hypothesis 2: At post treatment and 6 month follow-up, WMFTT will be significantly smaller (faster) than that of the baseline evaluation.
Hypothesis 3: At post treatment and 6 month follow-up, the behavioral kinematics of reach-to-grasp action measured by movement time and reach-to-grasp coordination will be better after than that of the baseline evaluation.
Hypothesis 4: At post treatment and 6 month follow-up, the SIS hand domain and full SIS will be greater than that of the baseline evaluation.
