The principal investigator (PI) proposes to develop a chip-scale optical sensor based on mid-IR absorption. The original idea is to develop such sensor using Ge-rich Si1-xGex semiconductor optical waveguides on Silicon chip. The optical mode of the semiconductor optical waveguide can interact with the sensed biological or chemical molecules to detect their presence. The change in the level of optical power at the output of the optical waveguide can be related to the different concentration levels of the sensed molecules. In this project, water and CO2 detection will be employed as simple pilot examples to serve the main objective of experimentally validating the usefulness of Si-based on-chip optical sensor technology in practical situations, which is still in its initial stage in the Si-photonics research community. As a new scholar, the PI also aims to utilize this 2-year project as an initial step to apply Si-based optical sensor chip technology into other impactful biological and chemical applications in Thailand
