This research aims to further develop an integrated model process for maximized utilization of lignocellulosic biomass for development of economically feasible biorefinery model. The project will focus on further exploration of the fractionation technology and design of the fractionation unit prototype for a selected model biomass i.e. sugarcane bagasse using the combined hydrothermal/ solvothermal process based on previously obtained Liquid Hot Water (LHW) platform. The separated biomass components i.e. cellulose, hemicelluloses, and lignin will be characterized and demonstrated for further conversion to model products e.g. biofuel as the main product and valorized chemicals of industrial interest as co-products via fermentation and catalytic routes. Based on all scientific knowledges achieved, an up-scaled fractionation/conversion system will be designed and fabricated. Key concept of this prototype system is to fractionate different types of biomass to high purity cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin for later converting to several industrial-needed end products. From the success of this prototype fabrication, other promising biorefinery technologies can be efficiently created under collaboration between the academic institutes and industrial partnerships. Other objectives of this project include:
To develop the scientific knowledge for the integrative biorefinery technology to produce clean alternative fuels as well as valuable chemicals from local feedstock
To create the collaborative integrative biorefinery platforms and prototypes (from which related to the three main research platforms as mentioned earlier) between JGSEE and NSTDA as the focal point for future industrial partnership
To improve the national security for energy/fuel reservation along with reduce the social, environmental and economic impacts from the high import and utilization rates of conventional fuels
To develop highly qualified Thai researchers in the field of biorefinery technology
To publish research outputs in well-recognized international journals
To promote and strengthen research collaborations with researchers both in Thailand and other countries as well as the partnership in the industries
