วัตถุประสงค์
:
The primary motivation of this study is upon identifying and comparing entrepreneurship, innovation and the technical efficiency performance of manufacturing SMEs in selected ASEAN economies, including Thailand, Philippines, Malaysia, Laos, Indonesia and Cambodia and key factors contributing to this technical (in) efficiency. In doing so this will facilitate:
2.1 a clearer understanding of entrepreneurship, innovation and the technical efficiency of manufacturing SMEs in general across ASEAN countries, utilizing the most substantive and most recently available cross-sectional firm-level data from the World Bank Enterprise Survey;
2.2 identification of the key factors contributing to the technical (in)efficiency of manufacturing SMEs emphasizing entrepreneur characteristics (age, gender, education, work experience) and innovation (new products, processes, organization structure), resource factors and psychological factors in the selected ASEAN economies, thereby enabling an international comparative analysis across these countries and identification of key differences between them;
2.3 identification of which country SMEs are competitively well placed (technically efficient) to enter global markets, participate in high value adding production network activities;
2.4 identification of which country manufacturing SMEs are poorly placed competitively to enter global markets (technically inefficient), are more likely to participate in low value adding production network activity;
2.5 identification of country specific policy measures likely to be effective in enhancing SME technical efficiency in ASEAN economies with a particular emphasis on entrepreneur characteristics and innovation activity.
