This project seeks to understand the role of social factors, in particular social interactions, social learning, and social norms, on travellers decision-making and mode choice behavior. The study seeks to answer questions such as how does social interaction such as calling a friend lead to making a trip?, how does social learning, such as knowing what decisions made by friends, influence an individuals mode choice behavior?, and how do social norms, such as a popular transport mode in a particular area, influence an individuals mode choice selection? The specific objectives of this project include:
1. To develop an algorithmic framework for inferring travel behavior based on mobile phone data.
2. To develop an algorithmic framework for inferring social relationship based on mobile phone data.
3. To develop an understanding of the relationship between social and travel behaviors.
These objectives will provide essential and fundamental knowledge needed to understand the role of social influence on travel behavior and such insights will serve as a basis for future work within academia and beyond.
